Why Your Utility Company Matters More Than Your Solar Panels

When most people start researching solar, they ask questions like:

  • Which solar panels are the best?
  • How many panels will I need?
  • How much money will I save?

Those are all important questions.

But there’s one question that’s even more important, and it’s one many people never think to ask: “Who is my electric utility company?”

At Superior Energy Solutions, one of the first things we look at isn’t your roof… it’s your utility provider.

Not All Utility Companies Play by the Same Rules

One of the biggest misconceptions about solar is that every homeowner, farm, or business receives the same benefits.

The reality is that every electric company has its own policies regarding solar interconnection, net metering, system sizing, and excess energy production.

That means two neighbors with nearly identical homes could receive very different recommendations simply because they’re served by different utilities.

Some Ohio Utility Companies We Work With

Our team regularly designs systems for customers served by utilities such as:

  • AEP Ohio
  • FirstEnergy (including Toledo Edison and Ohio Edison service areas)
  • Midwest Electric
  • Paulding Putnam Electric Cooperative
  • Hancock-Wood Electric Cooperative
  • Midwest Energy & Communications
  • & many other municipal and cooperative utilities throughout Ohio and surrounding states. Each one has its own requirements, application process, and limitations.

That’s why experience matters.

One Size Doesn’t Fit All

Here’s a real-world example.

Recently, we completed a solar installation for a local farm.

The customer wanted to offset 100% of their annual electric usage.

Because of their specific utility company’s policies, the system was limited to approximately 80% of their annual consumption.

Did that mean solar wasn’t worth it?

Not at all.

The project still delivered excellent long-term savings and a strong return on investment.

For another customer served by a different utility, we may be able to design a system that offsets 100% (or even slightly more) of their annual usage.

The right answer depends on the utility, not just the roof.

Sometimes the Best Recommendation Is… Not Solar

This might surprise you coming from a solar company, but not every property is a great candidate for solar.

If your utility policies, electrical usage, roof condition, or future plans don’t support a strong financial return, we’ll tell you.

Why?

Because we’d rather earn your trust than make a sale.

Solar is a long-term investment. If it doesn’t make financial sense today, we’d rather help you understand why than install a system that won’t meet your expectations.

Local Experience Makes the Difference

National solar companies often use the same sales presentation everywhere they go.

But as you can see, Ohio isn’t one market. It’s dozens of different utility territories, each with unique rules and opportunities.

Our team works with these utilities every day.

We understand the application process. We know the interconnection requirements. We stay up-to-date on changing policies.

Most importantly, we design every system around the customer’s goals, not a sales quota.

Thinking About Solar?

Whether you’re a homeowner, farmer, business owner, school district, or municipality, we’d be happy to review your electric bill, explain your utility company’s policies, and help you determine whether solar is the right investment for your property.

No pressure.

Just honest answers from your local energy experts at Superior Energy Solutions.
